BH Global’s CMO, Jasmin Lim, was invited to be a panel speaker at “Together For Change – Celebrating Women’s Impact on IWD 2025”. An event celebrating International Women’s Day and the International Day for Women in Maritime with an inspiring evening that champions diversity, sparks meaningful dialogue, and recognises the contributions of women in the maritime industry, jointly organised by SSA Young Executives Group, Association of Singapore Marine & Offshore Energy Industries, Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union, Singapore Logistics Association, and The Nautical Institute.
Joining fellow panellists, Mary Ann Bey, Deputy Director, Membership & Industry Development at Singapore Logistic Association, and Sue Ann Gan, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright; alongside moderator Capt. Hari Subramaniam, Honorary Chair at the Nautical Institute, together, they explored the issues faced by younger generations in the maritime industry and the challenges face by each individual association and maritime sector.
During the panel, Jasmin shared on her perceptions of the current maritime industry, with it being often misunderstood as old school and lacking innovation. Yet she believes the maritime industry holds a breadth of exciting, tech-driven opportunities in areas like sustainability, cybersecurity, and marine electrification.
Jasmin acknowledges that one of the biggest challenges is bridging the gap between legacy systems and the digital expectations of younger professionals. At the same time, access to professional networks and strong mentorship — especially for those from non-traditional backgrounds — can greatly shape a young person’s experience in the field.
One way to attract younger individuals to enter the maritime industry will be to encouraging mentorship, including reverse mentoring, helps create more connected and inclusive teams. Empowerment matters. Culture in maritime is also slowly but surely shifting, with less hierarchical structures: openness to ideas, collaboration, diverse talent, and appetite to change. For impact and purpose-driven young people, maritime offers a powerful platform to make real-world impact — from climate transition to global trade and food security — making it far more relevant and urgent than many might realize.
